Senior Labour figures have acknowledged that the party’s stance on Gaza cost it seats in Thursday’s election, with four MPs unexpectedly losing to pro-Palestinian independents.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting admitted the party had been affected by its position on the Middle East crisis, narrowly retaining his Ilford North seat by just 528 votes. Streeting noted that Gaza had been a significant issue for Labour across the country.
John McTernan, a former adviser to Tony Blair, cautioned the party against ignoring the message sent by parts of its core vote.
