This simulated oblique view presents Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano on Mars and the largest in the Solar System, spanning about 600 km in width. The High Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA’s Mars Express collected the data, and the oblique perspective was generated using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). This data collection is part of innovative research that has, for the first time, detected water frost near Mars’s equator, a region previously considered unlikely to harbor frost. The vertical scale in the image is exaggerated by a factor of five.
