Split is the largest city and port in central Dalmatia, the second-largest city in Croatia and the administrative center of Split-Dalmatia County.
Split is surrounded by the islands Brač, Hvar, Solta, and Čiovo. According to the census of 2001, the city of Split has 188.694 inhabitants.
The climate in Split is mild and Mediterranean, with an average temperature of 26°C, and mild winters with an average annual rainfall of 900 mm. This makes Split one of the sunniest places in Europe.
The City of Split has changed its name several times throughout history. Its present name started as Spalatos (Gr.), Spalatum (lat.), Spalato (ital.), and finally Spljet or Split. The Greek name for it is Aspalathos.
Split is a cultural, political and economic center of Dalmatia and one of the oldest cities in the world. It is believed that it is 1700 years old, and its founder was Roman Emperor Diocletian, who built his palace in the Split area.
