DESCRIPTION:
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte announced her resignation as Education secretary in a press conference on Wednesday but said that this was "not a sign of weakness" but stemmed out of her concern for teachers and the youth.
Duterte made the announcement shortly after Malacanang released its statement on Duterte's resignation.
At 2:21 p.m. of 19 June 2024, Vice President Sara Duterte, went to Malacanang and tendered her resignation as member of the Cabinet, secretary of the Department of Education and vice chairperson of the NTF Elcac, effective 19 July 2024," Presidential Communications Office Secretary Cheloy Garafil said in a statement.
Garafil said Duterte "declined to give a reason why" but "will continue to serve as vice president. We thank her for her service."
Speaking from her office in Pasig City, Duterte said she wanted an "orderly transition" for the next leader of the agency.
She also said that her resignation was "not a sign of weakness" but because of her concern for all teachers and Filipino youth.
She vowed to continue to monitor and stand up for every teacher and student for a "stronger Philippines."
Duterte thanked the Department's staff, led by its management committee, central offices, regional offices, as well as developmental partners and other organizations in bringing her plans into fruition.
Duterte was then former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s runningmate in the 2022 presidential elections under a platform of unity.
Months before her resignation, Duterte had a run-in with First lady Liza Araneta-Marcos who criticized the vice president for failing to stand up for the President when he was being criticized by members of her family, led by former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Both Marcos and Duterte downplayed the first lady's tirades although speculations swirled that the vice president was on her way out.
