In this video, I explain a simple test to determine if you’re hydrated or not, and tell you what to do if you’re dehydrated.

One electrolyte, sodium, mainly determines the amount of fluid in your body. There are other minerals involved, but sodium really is the driving force.

If you have too much sodium in your body, you get swelling. You see this in cardiovascular disease, as well as a condition called ascites, when your gut is filled with fluid. Usually the person is thin, with a huge protruding belly. This is caused by cirrhosis of your liver, causing fluid to leak into a sac around your abdomen. You’ll also see edema (swelling) with kidney disease or diabetes.

But when you’re low in sodium, you get dehydrated. You can get low blood pressure, low nutrients, and low oxygen because of poor circulation.

A very simple test to check for dehydration is to pinch up the skin on the back of your hand, and see how quickly it returns to normal. The longer it takes to flatten back out, the more dehydrated you are.

When you do a keto diet, your need for salt increases. On a higher-carbohydrate diet, you retain sodium. As well, if you’ve had diarrhea, vomiting, or on diuretics, this could be another reason you need more sodium. (As a side note only, if you’re drinking too much water and become way too low on sodium, you could experience a serious condition called hyponatremia.)

When you increase your sodium intake, be sure to increase your fluid intake along with it. The most common thing I see when people go on keto is that they don’t consume enough salt. Be sure to use sea salt!

One last point. If your adrenal glands are shut down, a condition called Addison’s, you no longer can retain sodium. You’ll need to consume a high amount of salt to offset this problem.

Now you know what to do if you’re dehydrated.
