If Lori Can Do It, So Can You!
Quick and Simple Step by Step Instructions on How to Repair a Broken Window.
I was motivated to fix our broken window after I was quoted $140 to repair it. This project cost me less than $50 dollars.
Supplies:
1. 2 Glazing Strips / Snap In Vinyl Window Glaze ( Get as many as you need for your window size) I bought mine at Ace Hardware store. Home Depot did not carry it. I simply brought the broken piece from the window or a picture and showed it to the clerk at Ace Hardware. The Glazing aids in keeping the glass into place.
2. Measuring Tape
3. Utility Knife/Scissors ( I found the scissors easier to use to cut the Glazing)
4. Dirty Rag
5. Safety Googles
6. The Glass ( My window dimensions were 22 inch by 21.25 inch. I said the wrong dimensions in the video. 😅 Opps.)
Tip: Shop around. I was able to get it for less than $25
7. Spatulas
Tip: I found the smaller spatula easier to removed glazing on the edges.
8. Pen/Pencil
9. Gloves
10. Silicone Sealant ( I used the DAP brand but you can use other brands of your preference. The hardware store clerk just suggested that one to me.) The Silicone Sealant helps keep rain and dirt from coming in and also secures the glass into place.
Steps:
1. Meausure the Window Dimensions: Length and Width
Tip: Measure at the metal corners of the window. Some people say to request .25 smaller than your measurements to leave space for expansion, but when I did that, the glass was too small for the window since I measured the dimensions using the metal corners. Measuring at the metal corners of window frame actually was perfect.
2. Purchase the Glass
Tip: Shop around. I was quoted $50 one place and was able to find another for less than $25.
3. Lock the Window prior to working on it.
I did not do that at the beginning and had to keep sliding it back into place.
4. Remove Excess Glass and Glazing
Tip: Wear a Leather Glove so you do not cut yourself from the broken glass.
Tip: Use the Spatulas to aid in removing the excess glazing. Some people are able to save the glazing and do not need to remove it, but the glazing on the broken glass was glued unto it and I could not avoid removing it with the broken glass.
5. Clean Off Old Silicone and Dirt from the Window.
This step is important so that the new glass will adhere well to the window.
I used any cleaning spray I had at home and used the Dirty Rag here to help in cleaning.
6. Cut the Glazing using the Window Dimensions
Tip: It was easier to just use scissors to do this instead of the utility knife.
I also had to trip down the Glazing to fit the window better especially the vertical sides even after I cut them slanted. Just try not to overcut or you may have to go back to the store to get another glazing strip.
Tip: Cut Horizontal or Top and Bottom Glazing STRAIGHT
Vertical or Left and Right Glazing cut SLANTED.
7. Cut the Silicone Tip at an Angle.
There are lines on the Silicone Sealant Tip to show you wear to cut. Also follow the instructions on the back of the tube as well. The Dap brand states it sets in minutes.
8. Apply the Silicone Sealant to Wear the Glass will Adhere to the Window.
9. Apply the Glass and Gently Press On
This way you do not break the glass you just purchased.
**Let it set for at least 30 minutes. I forgot to mention this on my video. 😅
10. Apply the Glazing.
Pay attention to where the lip is on the glazing. That lip should be flat on the glass if you are using the silicone sealant to secure the glazing around the glass on. If you are confident you can apply the glazing without breaking your glass, you can apply it to wear the lip fits into the space between the glass and the window side. You do not need sealant if you do this method. One tip that I was told to do this method is start mid way on the glass and slide the glazing in.
Let everything set for several hours and then YOU ARE DONE! Great Job! You did it. 😍
I hope this motivates you to tackle your own projects.
