On beds. I spread compost, just once a year, often in late autumn and to a depth of 2.5 cm/1 inch. I use no fertilisers for feeds.
I spread the same depth of old wood chip on paths, whose soil is used by plant roots for food and moisture.
See options, and the depth of mulch/cover you can spread, no more than 3cm and just once a year.
If your paths are growing a lot of weeds at the moment, you could put cardboard first on the weeds, then the woodchip on top.
Here I am spreading 18 month old, unsieved wood chip. It’s from a birch tree and was free from a tree surgeon.
