The end of India’s Lok Sabha elections has allowed us to look back and observe many instances of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news inundating social media during the election period. Our virtual event ‘Fact-checking and Combating Misinformation in Elections’ aims to analyze the observations of fact-checkers and experts to take stock of patterns and tools of misinformation, the potential of AI and inequities in regulations to prepare for a fairer and more informed democratic process in the future. With major jurisdictions like the UK, the US, and even certain parts of India heading into elections, these observations can better equip us to prevent and mitigate the spread of misinformation. We will discuss if the Election Commission of India’s Model Code of Conduct and commitments from multiple platforms to mitigate misinformation were adequate in controlling the spread of misinformation. Additionally, as we discuss further measures and regulations to combat the spread of fake news, we must also wrestle with its implications on freedom of speech.
