The current coronavirus pandemic is creating an enormous burden on the global economy. It is already inflicting serious damage on supply chains, demand, and the financial market, affecting business investment, household consumption, and international trade.
The ADB on 3rd April estimated the pandemic could cost the world economy $4.1 trillion or almost 5% of global gross domestic product. With the uncertainty of when will the pandemic end, governments are bracing for the full impact from the coronavirus economic downturn.
The Indonesian government has come up with the second stimulus package worth $8.1 billion to support the country’s economy and more package is still under discussion. Meanwhile, the G20 countries have pledged to inject $5 trillion in fiscal spending into the global economy.
How effective are the Indonesian government stimulus packages to mitigate the economic slowdown? Is the G20 effort effective in blunting the economic impact of the coronavirus and if so what outcome can be expected? How should the international community cooperate together in the face of a possible global recession?
