Regretfully, the storyline and scenes from 1923 Season 2, Indian School, are based on actual events that happened in the US in the early 1900s. Based on historical reports of what are known as "American Indian boarding schools," which first gained prominence in the mid-1800s, Father Renaud and Sister Mary abuse Teonna horribly. Only one of these institutions—the Fort Shaw Indian School—was established in Montana. But since the 1840s, about 200 more have emerged in nearly 30 US states, with a greater concentration in areas like South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Minnesota.
1923 is primarily about how the Dutton family managed the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch through the worst and most depressing period in Montanan history, even though the Indian School sequences are eerie and among the most memorable parts of the program. Despite being completely made-up, both the individuals and the details of their stories, the setting is heavily influenced by actual American history.
