On July 5 1977, Pakistan's Army General Zia-ul-Haq seized power from President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and imposed martial law in the nation. Zia Ul-Haq also placed Bhutto under house arrest. He dissolved the National Assembly, all provincial assemblies and had the Constitution of Pakistan suspended.
