We went to Cape Verde to dive with the Sharks. Usually, I prefer to drop beneath the Ocean to see Sharks, Here, the locals bring them to you! In Santa Maria, Sal, Cape Verde, the ONLY Sharks we saw were being slaughtered on the town pier. As a result of this disregard for the Ocean environment, there is very little to enjoy around the Southern coastline of this Island. The reason for the slaughter which occurs on a daily basis; on average nine sharks per week (That I saw) - So, the locals can 'beg' for a little money and in return the tourist gets a picture with a dead juvenile Shark, a Sharks tooth, a dead starfish, a shell, a dead porcupine fish or a small Shark fin. Cape Verde diving is a great example of the destruction caused by man's greed, Ignorance and want! - On average, if seven Sharks are removed from a family group around this Island, the group's fate is already sealed, mother nature cannot regenerate the species at this rate, so time will ensure the species becomes extinct - This must stop before it is too late.
