Freak Valley Festival is an experience every stoner rock fan should have in their lifetime. I've rarely been been to a festival that felt so much like an actual vacation resort rather than an ordeal. Because it is a vacation resort - a ski lodge that turns to festival grounds for a few thousand during the off season. The festival is run by cool people who know what they're doing, we had no problems with anything and saw no signs of attitude, from the bands or the crew. Instead we played a good set under pretty comfortable conditions, met up with a lot of friendly, mellow people who liked our music, and saw some great performances. Ouzo Bazooka from Tel Aviv were especially good.
Any unwanted drama came during the journey there. We had parked our van in Frankfurt the night before, in a secured parking spot next to the club entrance with all our gear inside. The owner who was supposed to meet us at 8am and remove the security pole was nowhere to be found. We were blocked in, along with all of our gear, the day of our biggest show.
Fortunately Ray Piller is a phenomenal handyman as well as bass player, and upon inspecting the pole, found a way to remove it from its base using his Leatherman tool.
Once en route, a wrong turn up a barely-marked road in an area with no GPS took us out of our way once again. But cool heads prevailed and when we finally arrived maybe an hour later than expected, they were ready and waiting for us. Soon we were situated, chilling on a couch, drinking coffee and meeting the other bands.
It was a great day for us. It was also my reunion with my wife Elise in the middle of our tour, a joyous occasion. She took the photos in most of the videos I'm posting from this show.
