I'm sure many of you are more clued-up on this than me but I had no idea that there was a replacement for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). It comes emblazoned with the Union Flag and carries the dubious title of the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). I say dubious because, unlike the suggestion of its name, it (currently) only has any benefit in EU countries. It also does not stretch as far as the EHIC as it cannot be used in the non-EU countries with special arrangements: Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland.
However, it is free to UK citizens and does provide you with basic health cover in the EU. It is not a substitute for travel insurance but it will often compliment your travel insurance as it will cover the excess payments on medical care.
