The number of illegal immigrants in South Korea has spiked 30 percent in four years to over 210,000.
According to the Ministry of Justice's aggregate data, as of July this year 213,000 undocumented immigrants live in South Korea compared to 167,000 four years ago.
The government said that although enforcement has become more vigorous, the number of illegal immigrants has grown with the overall proliferation of immigration into the country.
The authorities said that they are working on a crackdown policy as there is a possibility that some of the illegal immigrants are affiliated with terror groups. The authorities say they are focusing on illegal immigrants who have been here for ten years or longer.
Immigration and passport control at points of entry into the country, such as Incheon International Airport, will be tightened as well.
