Although there are indications that seafarers bore tattoos before the 1700s, Captain James Cook's voyages of exploration in the Pacific during the second half of the 18th century exposed Royal Navy sailors to Polynesian body art. These brought tattoos back to their fellow seamen in Europe and America.
Sailors has been getting tattoos before the 18th and 16th century however, many cultures besides, United States has been getting tattoos while going underway and during long voyages a lot of the sailors has gone tattoos for souvenir and travel, accolades and credibility duties while on the fleet.
