Many community July 4th firework shows have been cancelled this year because of the potential spread of COVID-19 in large crowds. This means more people than usual will attempt shows of their own, adding to concerns about safety.
Lieutenant William Smith, Fire Prevention Inspector at the Grand Rapids Fire Department, said fireworks, if not handled properly, can lead to blast injuries and severe burns.
