On this episode we take an in depth look at another outstanding and highly anticipated 2020 release from the brand Seiko. This new SPB159 (SBDC119) compass bezel-less model actually returns to the more basic format of the original Seiko Laurel Alpinist of the late 50's & Seiko Champion Alpinist of the early 60's. While in no way a reissue, this new Alpinist actually blends design elements from Seiko's more recent mainstream Alpinist offerings and packages them in a modest 38mm case with design cues that scream retro/vintage aesthetic, while still absolutely being ultimately capable of 'walking-the-walk' retaining their 20 ATM water resistance staple. So much so, that I couldn't resist paring this gradated tropical-like dial with an Uncle Seiko Topic-style rubber strap. When I first saw the renderings, I thought this release would be popular sure, but ultimately a bit more niche. After handling this one in the metal though, I have to say that I could see this one easily being a more mainstream hit due to its overall versatility, as well as it really just hitting a market well primed for a release like this. This Alpinist just hits so many of the right notes for me, I can't help but imagine it becoming another cult classic in the space. Let me know what you all think in the comments below, thanks guys!
