Start with four cords - you will be working with the outer two cords to knot around the middle two. Starting with the left cord make a '4' over the two middle cords. Lay the right cord over the cord making the four and tuck it behind the middle cords and up through the '4 hole'. Pull the cord all the way through and tighten the knot.

Do the same steps but start with the right cord. Make a '4' over the two middle cords. Lay the left cord over the cord making the four and tuck it behind the middle cords and up through the '4 hole'. Pull the cord all the way through and tighten the knot.

These two steps create a square knot.

An easy way to count how many square knots you have made is to count the notches on the left side.
