Release: 1990
Developer: UPL / Treco
Publisher: Treco
Also known as: アトミック・ロボキッド
Treco superb port of the classic UPL arcade game Atomic Robo-Kid is incredibly close to the original game. While no doubt by 1995 some studios would have been able to pull off a perfect port thanks to the increase in cartridge size by that point. This 1990 port looks and plays just like its arcade counter part, apart from a few missing levels and an overhaul of all the in-game cutscenes it hard to tell them apart. The Mega Drive port also does away with the arcade timer and the idle kill monster Gero Gero 11 (A giant unkillable version of Pac-Man who would chase after you if you stood still for too long) making it a far more balanced and enjoyable game. A maze shooter with multiple routes to choose from, gives this quite a bit of replay value. This type of shooter genre seems to have disappeared some time ago, perhaps it's time for a come back?
Atomic Robo-Kid was ported to a number of consoles and home computers back in the 1990s. Since then however it appears to have got loss in legal limbo and is unlikely to be re-released in any form in the near future, hopefully it will resurface one day.
