We’ve seen in our practice that ear piercing is done at different age groups in different cultures, sometimes according to the preference of the parents or the baby. It doesn’t really matter, but as early as 1 month or younger, it’s not really advisable because the pinna, the soft part of the ear or what we call lobule of the ear has not really fully formed. If you look at an infants ear, that would probably be about 2 or 3 millimeters wide, so if you pierce right now, you may not get the exact positioning of the ear ring in the future. You may even injure the cartilage, it is preferable to give a little time, just to have the lobule formed properly, you can hit the hole in the center. But, it doesn’t matter actually. We’ve seen especially in Arab world, as soon as the baby is discharged, the baby’s ears are pierced. So, it really doesn’t matter. Preferably after the lobule is formed for about half a centimeter size, after getting sufficient thickness. Younger it’s better, even if the older children and the pain is intolerable, use local anaesthetic creams and make that area slightly less sensitive.
