What does Turkey's longest bridge look like?
If you've ever been to Istanbul, you know it's a bustling city with a lot of traffic. So, it makes sense that Turkey would want to build a bridge to help alleviate some of that congestion. But not just any old bridge – they wanted to build the longest suspension bridge in the world! They started construction in 2017 and finished 18 months ahead of schedule. It connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea, which is convenient for people who live in Istanbul because they don't have to travel far to get across those bodies of water. There are also two bridges under construction: one will connect Asia and Europe. At the same time, the other will provide an alternative route over the Bosporus. The first phase of these bridges is expected to be completed by 2023, so if you're planning on visiting Istanbul anytime soon, there will be more options for getting around.
Why did they build it?
Many reasons are geared toward the construction of the 4.6 KM suspension bridge.
1. Aerodynamic stability
Turkey built the world's longest suspension bridge primarily because of its aerodynamic stability. Aerodynamic stability means that winds will not have as much effect on the structure and will not sway with the wind, which would be a significant concern if one were driving or walking across it. In addition, this also means that high-speed vehicles can travel across the span without being too affected by wind gusts or strong currents in either direction. Therefore, drivers can now cross from the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea coast at speeds up to 120 km/h, cutting down transportation time considerably.
2. Connect the Mediterranean and black sea
The bridge was also built to connect two continents - Asia and Europe. This benefits businesses looking for new ways to expand their distribution network and individuals who want to explore different parts of the country more easily. Moreover, this connection makes sense geographically, as it connects the continent's western edge with its eastern side. This way, people from neighboring countries can get access to outside markets. Also, all trade between these regions will flow more freely because there are no longer borders. Those living close to either side of the bridge provide easier access to jobs and economic opportunities in other cities. Previously, you had to take a ferry across the Dardanelles Strait and then drive another 6 hours through rugged mountain roads just to reach your destination.
3. Handle traffic loads
The bridge was also built to handle high traffic loads. As one of Europe's busiest tourist destinations, Istanbul receives a constant flow of vehicles, including cars, buses, and trucks. To reduce congestion and wait times at toll booths, officials decided that constructing a new bridge on its own would be more efficient than adding lanes to an existing crossing. This has helped increase convenience for locals and tourists alike.
