Plus sets are much more practical than 1RMs here’s why:
1️⃣ You can do them more frequently
While a 1RM attempt may be helpful for a powerlifter, I see a lot more benefit for your time from a 3RM or 5RM for most people.
2️⃣ Takes less time
It takes a lot of time to rest in between sets of 1 as you’re building up to a 1RM. Those singles with really high force and low speed aren’t that helpful for those with speed/ athleticism or endurance goals.
3️⃣ Testing is training
When you’re training sets of 3-5 and use a 3+ set or a 5+ set, that set is a training set that works right into the workout. In my opinion this is a better training stimulus for most people than a 1RM attempt.
🏋🏽♂️ Overall, I have been programming almost exclusively 3+ or 5+ sets into my athlete’s programs for the past few years now.
If you think that it will help your athletes too , give it a try.
