In this video I review two captive bolt guns for use in salmon aquaculture. Modern fish farming practices are changing. Fish biologists are evaluating traditional practices used on fish farms to increase animal welfare, increase worker safety and to make the fish biologist profession equitable especially in salmon aquaculture.
In my opinion the most humane way to kill a fish when fishing or on a fish farm is first by percussion stunning then followed by a bleeding step also known as exsanguination. Percussion stunning is regularly accomplished by a fish priest or club. The goal is to only strike the fish once, above the brain cavity to cause brain death before a fish euthanasia procedure. But what if they are large fish, such as chinook salmon, or even larger like a white sturgeon?!?!?!?!?! Perhaps then, a tool that can generate more force is required.
One agriculture technology that has been used by many animal food industries is the captive bolt gun or captive bolt pistol. In this video I evaluate two captive bolt guns in Salmon Aquaculture. First, I evaluated the Zephyr-f by Bock Industries [ Ссылка ] and then the HPS-1 Euthanasia Stunner by Jarvis. [ Ссылка ].
This is my personal opinion based upon my experience conducting animal welfare science. I evaluate how each captive bolt gun is used by fish biologists with no previous experience using these captive bolt guns who work in salmon conservation. While some of these fish biologists have years of experience, it is beneficial to review animal welfare on fish hatcheries and review how to kill a fish for general husbandry for spawning salmon.
I have no conflict of interest with either of these technologies or retailers and the opinions are my own.
