With the 101st Giro starting today, Matt explains how each jersey is eventually won. Grand tours can often be confusing so let us simplify how the classifications are worked out.

There are four main jerseys within the Giro. These comprise the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey), Maglia Azzurra (Blue Jersey), Maglia Ciclamino (Cyclamen Jersey) and the Maglia Bianca (White Jersey).

The blue jersey is worn by the best climber in the race, picking up points from the summits.

The purple jersey is worn by the best sprinter who will pick up points from the finishes as well as intermediate sprints.

The white jersey is for the best young rider. This rider must be under 25 years of age and will be leading the general classification for this age group.
