Not exactly 1977 (a year earlier in fact), but i wanted an excuse to post a track by the marvellous Australian session singer and 70's pop star Linda George, whose singles occasionally were listed as by 'Miss Linda George'. Born in Britain, and moving to Oz when she was a young teenager, Linda banded around for a few years, before breaking out as a solo artist and scoring chart hits in the early 70's with "Neither one of us" and "Our day will come" - both covers, and both establishing her as a bona fide pop star. Her debut album 'Linda' would feature her biggest hit - "Mama's Little Girl" (a Dusty Springfield cover) - a top 10 hit in 1974. Interestingly Renee Geyer, the premier r&b/pop singer in the country in the 1970's also recorded the song on her "It's a man's man's world" album also in 1974.
"Shoo be doo dah day" (the dah featured the extra 'h' on the word that wasn't on the original versions by Stevie Wonder in 1968 and Michael Jackson in 1972), was released late in 1975, and was a minor hit in early 1976. After her follow up album 'Step by Step wasn't a big success, Linda largely retreated from the industry, although still a widely respected session singer, she took up teaching, but thankfully still records and performs.
I have included images here of the two best known other versions of this soul classic - by the legendary Stevie and young Michael. But Linda's powerful vocal does the song justice as well, giving it a rockier, more pop feel to it, than those soul icons did.
Enjoy!
