Witty, surreal, irreverent and beautiful, Guy Maddin's fictional documentary is a dreamlike homage to his hometown of Winnipeg on Manitoba's windswept Great Plains. Maddin may wish to forget his upbringing in regional Canada, but My Winnipeg is testimony to the unique experiences of childhood and how they shape our identity. Among sleepwalking locals and frozen, fleeing horses, B-movie goddess Ann Savage stars as Maddin's mother, recreating the director's recollections as he remembers them... not necessarily as they were. But then, all memory is subjective, isn't it? Filmed in stunning black and white, My Winnipeg is a profoundly personal portrait of Manitoba's capital city, love it or hate it - even Maddin's not quite sure.
