Bytom - a city with district rights in southern Poland, in the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Silesian Upland, in the center of the Upper Silesian - Zagłębie Metropolitan Area.
According to the Central Statistical Office (CSO) data from June 30, 2020, Bytom was inhabited by 164,447 people. It is ranked 23rd among the largest cities in Poland.
Bytom included the compact inner city around the historic Old Town and the industrialized boroughs incorporated into the city in 1951: Bobrek, Karb, Szombierki, Łagiewniki, Miechowice, and since 1975 Radzionków, Sucha Góra, Stolarzowice, Górniki. At the time of its greatest territorial extent it covered the area of 8252 ha and had 236,400 inhabitants. It was an important industrial center (63 thousand employed in 1970) It had 6 coal mines: "Bobrek", "Powstańców Śląskich", "Dymitrow", "Miechowice", "Rozbark", "Szombierki"; 2 power plants: named after W. Drzymała in Miechowice and "Szombierki"; 2 ironworks: "Bobrek" and "Zygmunt"; zinc and lead ore mining plants; plants producing metallurgical machines, ropes and wires, prefabricated building elements, clothing plants (ZPO "Bytom"), meat plants, brewery, dairy and others.
Since 1945 Bytom has been the seat of the Silesian Opera.
