Yes it’s true Jaelen gained 17 lbs of muscle in 6 weeks using mainly 90 deg eccentric isometrics (the most effective training method). He also went from 60 lb dumbbell chest presses to 100’s (going up 10 lbs per week). He also went from only a few strict pull-ups to weighted variations with over 50 lbs of loading. More in my book MOVEMENT REDEFINED it explains all of my methods, 40% off link in bio.
So is 17 lbs of muscle mass in 6 weeks possible?? To the incompetent “experts” in the industry & trainees who don’t understand muscle physiology & stick to outdated antiquated methods then yes this sounds impossible. But let me explain why this is in fact highly feasible. As mentioned in my 1st post, this was NOT new muscle. It was muscle re-gain from 2019 as Jaelen was only in a moderately-trained state prior to coming to me & we were returning him to his playing weight from over a year ago. We did a major overhaul to his diet as & also used protein powder & creatine (no loading phase) as his main muscle building supplements. Also no steroids or PEDs.
In terms of muscle gain we have to understand sarcoplasmic hypertrophy vs sarcomere hypertrophy. If we were to only examine sarcomere or myofibrillar hypertrophy (an increase in the amount/size/number of contractile units within the muscle) then yes we would say 17 lbs is likely impossible. However, when we take into account sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (increase in sarcoplasmic fluid within the muscle), muscle glycogen, intramuscular water, & cellular volumization/swelling, all of which in muscle physiology are considered “muscle”, then yes 17 lbs doesn’t sound implausible.
Yes, most research shows significantly lower rates of muscle hypertrophy than this. However, we can expect that the level of muscle hypertrophy shown in research will typically be exponentially less than what we would see in real world scenarios with athletes because of 3 factors. 1) the training is lousy as it’s usually implemented by lab rats who have no training background or experience, 2) adherence & motivation by the participants to maximize results is often poor at best, 3) The genetics of those who are willing to participate in research studies is typically quite poor in comparison to high level athletes.
Something else to consider, there are numerous accounts including those in the Colorado experiment conducted by Arthur Jones on those such as Casey Viator reporting anywhere from 2-6x this rate of muscle gain with some participants showing over 40 lbs of muscle in 4 weeks.
Even if these are highly inflated numbers which they may be, Jaelens’ are mild at best compared to these. Had we actually trained for bodybuilding purposes perhaps we could have gained over 20 lbs of muscle but again the primary goal was performance not hypertrophy. Now, if you still find the results of 17 lbs of muscle in 6 weeks to be unbelievable then it simply shows how incredibly inefficient and ineffective your training methods are as you’e become accustomed to inferior results.
Additionally you’ve obviously never used 90 deg Eccentric Isometrics. With all of this in mind, 17 lbs of muscle mass re-gain in 6 weeks is not only feasible but if any expert in this field finds this unbelievable & so far superior to what they’re used to seeing, this then it’s time for them to find a new profession as they’ve clearly failed in this one & are are incompetent to say the least as they likely ascribe to antiquated, outdated, and ineffective training methods.
Note: Suggesting this is impossible only highlights your training incompetence. Please think before commenting.
Dexa scans are awesome but unfortunately most training facilities don’t have them as they’re used predominantly in clinical settings or research labs. Additionally even if you could use them it’s not something you’d want to use to frequently because it does use similar technology as X-ray so there’s light levels of radiation. Simply you would not use that to track or monitor an athletes progress throughout one’s training cycle except at the beginning and or end of the year. Also 7 site skin fold using Lang Skin fold caliper & Jackson Pollick equation which is what we used is still considered one off the gold-standard methods according to ACSM .
Eccentric Isometrics are very unique as you're maximally co-contracting into max stretched position while staying as tight as possible which typically ends up being 90 deg. This not only maximizes muscle activation & motor unit recruitment but creates max co-contraction in eccentric which lifter up to handle max loading and produce the greatest levels of torque since you’re essentially inhibiting the golgi tendon response that would contribute to autogenic inhibition.
