Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, located 275 km north-west of Bucharest, known for its beautiful architecture, culture and gastronomy. Former capital of the Principality of Transylvania, now is the capital of the Sibiu County. Sibiu was the European Capital of Culture in 2007 and in 2008 it was ranked "Europe's 8th-most idyllic place to live" by Forbes. Sibiu hosted the European Union Summit in 2019.
The town located in the heart of Transylvania was a powerful and prosperous citadel in medieval Europe. The original fortifications which surrounded Sibiu consisted of imposing walls, 39 defensive towers, four gates, five bulwarks and five artillery batteries. The defensive network is well-preserved until today. The Thick Tower (Turnul Gros), built in the 16th century, was the place of the first theatrical performance in Sibiu, dated 1778.
Located in the heart of the old walled city and surrounded by impressive buildings, the Great Square is the largest square in the city. It was mentioned in a written document as a grain market in 1411, but it existed since 1366, when the third fortification belt of the city was completed. Throughout the centuries the Great Square was the place of the town’s merchant activity and the place where the public assemblies were held. The Great Square was designated an architectural monument by UNESCO.
