I decided to walk at night and alone the streets of Chamelecon, one of the most feared neighborhoods in Honduras. My local guides wanted me to show the world that crime in Chamelecon had gone down so much that most of the neighborhood was now safe enough for me to walk through, even in the pitch dark of night. My guides wanted me to help clear things up for the stigmatized neighborhood, and I was honored by their invitation. But I’ll be honest. I was scared. After all, just 7 years ago, the New York Times named Chamelecon the most dangerous neighborhood in San Pedro Sula due to the gang wars. I had no idea what to believe.

There was only one way to find out. But without my local guides, I quickly get lost in the dimly lit streets and have to find my way by asking random strangers. I decide to move forward because I wanted to find out the truth and share it with you.
