Ethnotik Gamelan Orkestra is a traditional and contemporary gamelan group from Caboolture, based on gamelan Degung from West Java, Indonesia.
Degung is an ensemble of percussion instruments based on a pentatonic scale, using gongs, metallophones, drums and flutes.
Historically, gamelan Degung was only played for kingdom ceremonies. Nowadays, you can hear gamelan degung at a variety of ceremonies, including weddings/opening ceremonies.
Ethnotik Gamelan Orkestra have a variety of different kinds of compositions, from classical degung, new creations and contemporary compositions to also experimenting with alternative genres of music like jazz, blues, rock, classical, electronic, etc.
All members of the group are professional musicians from different backgrounds but with a joint love of playing and sharing gamelan music. Most of them have been learning western and traditional music for many years and have also undertaken gamelan study in Indonesia.
