Toyota's declaration may lead many to believe that the company is at the forefront of developing ammonia engines. However, the pursuit of ammonia-powered vehicles began a decade ago when researchers at the Korea Institute of Energy Research designed and tested a car named AmVeh, which ran on 70% ammonia and 30% gasoline. This innovation reduced carbon emissions by 70%, and the AmVeh team was clearly focused on the potential of a fully ammonia-powered engine.

Ammonia (NH₃) is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen that can be used as fuel in internal combustion engines (ICE) and fuel cells. It has several advantages as a fuel. First, ammonia has a high energy density of about 18.6 megajoules per kilogram, compared to hydrogen, which has an energy density of about 120-142 megajoules per kilogram. However, hydrogen needs to be stored as a liquid or compressed gas at standard temperature and pressure, reducing its efficiency. In contrast, ammonia can be more easily stored as a liquid at lower temperatures and pressures. Liquid ammonia has a slightly higher energy density than gasoline or diesel, with approximately 37.95 kilowatt-hours per gallon compared to gasoline's 33.7 kilowatt-hours per gallon. This means that ammonia can store energy more efficiently than hydrogen due to its chemical and physical properties.
