There's a little known story of a small group of rough and ready Australian troops and their remarkable exploits in Timor during World War Two. Recruited mainly from the bush in 1942, these men became the first Australians to successfully fight guerrilla warfare. They were launching relentless hit and run raids on the Japanese months before the fighting on the Kokoda track. They also proved the Japanese could not only be matched, but also beaten. Their enemy dubbed them 'The Men Who Came Out of the Ground', which is the title of a new book by journalist and author Paul Cleary. You might recall we spoke to Paul in 2007 about his book 'Shakedown' which discussed the quest for rights to the lucrative oil and gas resources in the Timor Sea. Paul spent a decade in the Canberra press gallery and is also an adviser to the East Timorese government.
