Boss fight with Champion Gundyr on NG.

Once you've made it to the second phase of the fight (and died) a couple times, you realize this guy. never. stops. swinging. It's really hard to get any hit in once he gets serious. I found out that, when fighting him normally, it's better to stay out of range, then time and run back in for a running attack right after he finishes a move/combo, instead of staying within range and doing rolling attacks. You can avoid a lot of follow-ups this way. That being said, I used a spear against this guy, so this worked fine.

Another way to fight him is to parry and riposte, which might actually be a much easier approach. When you stay right in front of him, he doesn't have a lot of different attacks. Even when he enters uber mode, he does have some faster/more aggressive combos, however, the first attacks of these combos tend to be the same - slow and easy to parry. Most of his attacks can be parried (including that vertical smash that he tends to open the fight with), except the grab, the shoulder bash, the kick, and the jumping/halberd planting.

Honestly speaking, even if you die while trying the parry/riposte method, it's way less frustrating than dying trying to fight him normally.
