Pope Francis said he felt shame for not believing Chilean victims who claimed Bishop Juan Barros, who he appointed in 2015, covered up child sex abuse by his mentor Fernando Karadima. The pontiff initially said Barros was innocent, calling the accusations slander and insisting there was 'not a single piece of evidence against him'. The Pope changed his tune after feeling shame reading a 2,300-page report by one of his top sexual abuse investigators and invited victims to the Vatican to beg their forgiveness in person.
