Here is a short how to of a heat exchanger that I built when I was renting a house in university. The photos show it when I was deconstructing it, so give a good demo of how it was built. The chimney on the stove had a great draught and so the stove didn't put out much heat. After a bit of research I came up with this. It is made from 10 coloured hollow concrete blocks sandwiched between 2 concrete patio slabs. It was cheap, built in half a day and easily demountable, which was important as I wanted my rental deposit back. It has the shortcoming of not being ceramic, so it does not store as much heat as a ceramic one. But it really made the house much warmer than the stove on its own, and used a lot less fuel. I burned well seasoned firewood, and any dry paper waste. I would burn an intense fire for about 30 mins and let it die down. then close the damper on the stove and bask in the heat for 4 hours. It had a lovely warm constant heat, not the intense sharp heat from an enamel stove. Try it out. I cut the blocks with a 9 inch grinder with a diamond blade and I used potters clay mixed with fine sand as the mortar. It is not sealed in any way, and the only thing that stops smoke coming out is the negative pressure caused by the draught from the chimney. I would recommend complying with all building regulations and fitting smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Thanks for reading.
