On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, a major ice storm consisting of freezing rain impacted Montreal, Canada and the surrounding region. up to 35 millimetres (1.2 inches) of ice coated sidewalks, streets, signs and more.
Two of the main objects most vulnerable to the freezing rain were electrical power lines and tree branches. As ice accumulated on tree branches, many of them fell directly on electrical power lines, resulting at one point in no electricity for over one million customers in Quebec.
I was one of those that lost electrical power from Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at approximately 5:00 PM until Sunday, April 9, 2023 at approximately 8:00 PM.
In this video, I walk around various parts of Montreal starting with the downtown core of the city on the first day of the storm - Wednesday, April 5, 2023 - and ending my coverage on Sunday night - Sunday, April 9, 2023 - of the same week when most electricity was restored.
This was the worst ice storm to hit Montreal since the great Ice Storm of 1998.
Because of climate change and global warming, expect more extreme weather.
