The Center for the National Interest hosted a Zoom webinar event on how the United States is likely to fare as we emerge from the global COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday, May 7th, 2020. Will the global order remain largely unchanged? Or will the United States enter into a new world in which globalization and interdependence are a thing of the past, while state sovereignty becomes increasingly significant?
Two prominent speakers addressed this issue: Joseph Nye, Distinguished Service Professor, emeritus, at Harvard University and Dimitri K. Simes, president and CEO of the Center for the National Interest. Jacob Heilbrunn, Editor of the National Interest magazine, moderated the discussion. Mr. Simes calls for a return to strategic thinking rooted in a clear-eyed assessment of its alliances and relations with international institutions such as the G20 to help promote long-term stability and prosperity. Dr. Nye contends that America should choose “cooperative and soft-power enhancing polices” to ensure “a geopolitical path to a better world,” as argued in his recent article in Foreign Policy. They both provide insightful answers to pressing questions about the future of the United States and the global order in the post-pandemic world, especially with regard to China and Russia.
