The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents and other grownup caregivers start reading to their babies as soon as possible after they are born. Benefits include closer bonding, brain development, stronger language and other skills, and higher school readiness. Sounds amazing!
However…people often think reading to babies sounds crazy. After all, babies cry, they fall asleep, they chew books and throw them onto the floor. Do they even understand? Yes, they do! It’s all part of the amazing process of developing healthy reading routines.
So how do you do it? While how often you read is important, research has found that the level of interaction during book sharing – words, feelings, actions - may be most important of all.
This video highlights SHARE/STEP, a new approach developed by pediatricians and other experts that suggests ways to make reading with your baby more fun and stimulating.
SHARE stands for: 1) Snuggle on your lap; 2) Hands on - let the baby Hold and explore the book; 3) show Affection so the baby connects reading with love (it’s “love-ly”!); 4) Respond to what the baby does or says; and 5) Enjoy the process, rather than worry about reading the “right” way. You are your child’s best and most important teacher!
STEP stands for ways to Respond to your baby: 1) Stretch word sounds (this is called “child-directed Speech,” which is discussed in a related video); 2) Talk about pictures in the book and how they relate to the baby’s world; 3) Explore word sounds in fun ways (e.g., train or animal noises); and 4) be Patient, as reading with babies is often messy.
After watching this video, try SHARE/STEP with a baby in your life – have fun!
