WYATT: Look. My broken heart.
BAILEY: We went to our
20-week ultrasound,
and she immediately knew that
he had a congenital heart
condition, Tetralogy of Fallot.
It all happened so fast, that we
didn't even know what to think.
Look how small you are.
We wanted to have the
support of family around us,
and we also heard what great
care we'd have in Maine.
And so, it really
was a no-brainer
for us, to stay in Maine.
I got to hold him for about
five minutes, and then,
on his third day alive,
he had his heart surgery.
WYATT: What did they do?
They put it back together?
BAILEY: They opened up an
artery and attached it,
so that your blood could
flow to your lungs.
DR. MALHOTRA: We're very fortunate at
Maine Medical Center to be able
to offer the only
congenital heart program
in Northern New England.
The patient is the center
of everything we do.
BAILEY: You can just tell how much
they genuinely care about him,
and it automatically
makes him feel more
at ease and comfortable.
DR. MALHOTRA: We have doctors that are
specially trained to take care
of children who've had heart
surgery, as well as the nurses.
Every aspect, it's a
team that works together.
We have been able to
minimize the number
of operations these children
have, decrease the trauma
of the operations, and improve
their lifestyle, long-term.
BAILEY: We find ourselves
completely forgetting
that he even has a heart defect.
We don't have to
worry about it at all.
You know? He's just
a normal little guy.
