Osh was wondering on my "How Big Is One Trillion Dollars?" video how a trillion dollars in pennies would look like.
This sounds like a great idea! I already showed you how a trillion dollars look like in one dollar bills. Although Osh mistook the $1 bills for the $100 ones, he does have a point. How BIG are a trillion dollars in pennies?
Well, that sounds like a job for... ME!
Looking online for people asking the same questions as Osh and me, I ended up on The MegaPenny Project., who I found out shared our interests in trillions and pennies:
The MegaPenny Project aims to help by taking one small everyday item, the U.S. penny, and building on that to answer the question:
"What would a billion (or a trillion) pennies look like?"
My kind of people. Looking over their presentation I saw they took a similar approach to what I had in mind: stacking the pennies one on top of the other. After that, laying them side by side to form a square shape in the end, to make it easier to visualize big numbers.
My fear is that I won't make for a very accurate video, because of the space between the pennies, but since I have neither a better way of calculating it nor a better PC to make it all a dynamic simulation, I will go with my initial thoughts.
The US Penny has a 0.75 inches in diameter (or 19.05 mm) a thickness of 0.0598 inches (or 1.52 mm) and a weight of 2.5 grams.
1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 pennies.
How big are one trillion dollars in pennies?
Well, $1 trillion in pennies means 1,000,000,000,000 dollars each 100 pennies, so 100 trillion pennies. I want to end up with a cube, so I need 3 numbers that will tell me how many pennies are there on each side. Calculating the cube root would not be the best way here since the pennies are waaaay thinner than their other dimensions, so a stack of 100 pennies on each side would be a very flat stack in reality since 100 pennies thick is much less than 100 pennies wide.
Since it's a multiple of ten, I will need multiple of tens on each side. Let's presume my stack is 1 million pennies high.
1 mil x 10k x 10k = 1 tril
$1 trillion dollars in pennies is 100 trillion pennies, meaning 10 thousand pennies on each side and 1 million pennies high. That's a tower weighing 250 million tons and measuring 625ft on two sides and 4983ft and 4 inches in height.
Right next to the trillion dollars in pennies, I placed the Statue of Liberty, the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.
