Every one of us has played a game in which someone dares you to a first-to-breathe contest. Some can manage five minutes, others barely one. How long can you go without breathing? Try it right now. The first 30 seconds are easy. We bet you are ready to give up at 45 seconds but push on through, and it seems to get easier for a while. But as the second-hand ticks past a minute, you know you're on borrowed time. Your heart must be pounding right about now. It's okay to quit.
For most animals – including humans – a lack of oxygen can be fatal within minutes. Breath-holding ability becomes extremely important in some sports, particularly freediving. Did you know there's a trick to holding your breath? According to pro-divers, do some very slow breathing for several minutes before each dive, then a big, deep breath before holding it all in.
Some have suggested that the ability to voluntarily hold your breath is evidence of a watery episode in human evolution. It’s even been said that humans can lower heart rate and metabolic rate to breath-hold for even longer. But in light of recent discoveries, it’s revealed to be nothing more than fiction.
But some animals are so amazing at holding their breath that the best human freedivers pale in comparison. Goldfish go months without oxygen by making alcohol inside cells! The sperm whale can hold their breath for approximately 90 minutes. Elephant seals can hold their breath for about two hours if needed before swimming back up for air.
How long can you hold your breath? What would happen to your body as you hold your breath? What is the record for the longest breath-hold?
