Five years ago, Lexus introduced the RX L, a half-hearted attempt at a car-based 3-row with a laughably small seating area for two more. But this new TX rights that wrong and finally delivers the perfectly-sized SUV Lexus devotees and its dealer body have been asking for. And just like the Toyota Grand Highlander from which it is originates, it’s offered in a plethora of drivetrain configurations and trim levels ranging in price from $55,000 to over $80,000 as seen here. But do you know what Toyota’s version doesn’t offer? A plug-in hybrid. So, this week I’m getting to know the range-topping TX model known as the 550h+ in its sole Luxury AWD trim. Starting price is $78,000 and is optioned here with every available package to $81,195. If that sounds expensive to you, well, that’s because it is. Now, I do like the TX’s swoopy styling and I understand that 400+ horsepower plug-in hybrid technology doesn’t come cheaply, but the MSRP of this one scares me a little bit.
MSRP as-tested: $81,195
