1st in a series about creating my vintage inspired, colourful and sustainable capsule wardrobe for summer and travel.
I am sewing my own capsule wardrobe, primarily because I don't have many clothes for my new life on the pocket farm, but also because I will be traveling to Europe for my daughters wedding in the summer and I don't have any clothes to take that will work together for the changeable weather and different activities we will encounter.
I like colourful clothes and never wear jeans so I have found that the information on the internet wasn't very useful until I came across some old patterns from the 50s, 60s and 70s showing weekend capsule wardrobe ideas. I then went down the YouTube and Pinterest rabbit holes of vintage fashion and discovered many excellent videos, information and images explaining how people designed and created their wardrobes in a time before fast fashion when dressing was more sustainable and created less waste (there were of course some fairly questionable practices such as real fur but I won't go into that here) . I also did quite a lot of thinking and analysing of my existing clothes and tried to work out why they didn't work together and came up with my theory of the 6 C's: colour, cloth, cut, collar, context & character. These are the aspects that I've found need to be addressed to create a successful capsule wardrobe.
DEFINITION OF A POCKET FARM
[noun] A pocket farm is a small area of land that has been repurposed to grow food and/or keep small animals (worms count) as its primary purpose. It is an oasis of sustainable agriculture and wildlife habitat in or around a densely populated area. May include: balconies, patios, driveways ... or anything you can think of really!
