Machairodus is a genus of extinct sabertooth cats that lived in Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America from the Late Miocene through the Middle Pleistocene epochs. In Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, they are one of the most dangerous predators that can attack your hominid and their clan. They can cause bleeding, injury, and venom poisoning with their powerful bites and claws. They can also stalk you and ambush you at any time, even inside your oasis.

There are three variants of Machairodus in the game: golden, black, and white. Each variant has a different coat pattern, strength, and behavior. The golden Machairodus is the most common and the least difficult to deal with. It has a gold-yellow coat with dark stripes all over it. It does not have a lair and wanders randomly. The black Machairodus is the second most common and the second most difficult to deal with. It has a sooty black coat with leopard-like spots that are hard to see. It has a territory centered around a lair that is marked by bones on the ground. It wanders its territory periodically and rests at its lair. The white Machairodus is the rarest and the most difficult to deal with. It has a light coat with an almost identical pattern to the golden Machairodus. One of its saber teeth is also broken. It does not have a lair and only spawns as a stalker cat that follows you after your first evolution leap.

To survive against the Machairodus, you need to learn how to use weapons and counterattack skills. You can use rocks, stones, wood-based weapons, bone-based weapons, precious stones, or miscellaneous weapons to strike them with blunt force or piercing damage. You can also dodge their attacks by timing your movements correctly. You can stockpile weapons for easy access or distribute them to your clan members for group defense. You can also learn specific neurons that improve your combat abilities and chances of killing them.
