Let’s explore.
A technician extracts venom from the species of snake for which the
anti-venom is to be developed. This venom is, then, purified. A small, harmless dose of this purified venom is, then, injected into a
horse. The toxins in the venom trigger the horse’s immune system to produce antibodies that have the capability to neutralize those toxins. Over a period of a few years, the horse is administered several booster shots with an increasing amount of venom. Thus, the horse produces so many antibodies that can effectively neutralize venom toxins. Next in the process, a blood sample is taken from the horse, from which, plasma, which contains the antibodies against venom, is extracted. Finally, from the plasma so extracted, antibodies are collected and
purified. These purified antibodies are used as anti-venom to treat people stung by
snake bites.
