In association with Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage, the Frist has partnered with Artville, the Edgehill neighborhood’s Brighter Days program, Fisk University, and Tennessee State University to create off-site public murals to meet our community outside of our galleries. Now, on the campus of TSU, exhibited artist Derek Fordjour’s work can be seen on seven monumental outdoor murals.
Fordjour, who was born and raised in Memphis and is an alumnus of Morehouse College, celebrates the tradition and vitality of HBCU marching bands in his multilayered works. After the collage Airborne Double from his marching band series was selected for Multiplicity, the Frist and Fordjour collaborated to honor TSU’s world-renowned and Grammy Award Winning Aristocrat of Bands on their own campus. Lining the school entrance and installed on the Performing Arts Center building, the murals will be on view to the public through the end of the school year.
