Long COVID-19 has affected and continues to affect millions of people. What about persistent symptoms or new gastrointestinal illnesses after COVID-19 infection though? New evidence suggests that there is an increased risk of the development of a new gastrointestinal disease or persistent gastrointestinal symptoms after COVID-19 recovery.

They looked at acid reflux, GERD, peptic ulcer disease, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, gastritis, cholangitis and also persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, and constipation. They found that previous COVID-19 infection increased the risk for these conditions and symptoms proportional to the severity of the original infection.
