Considered an engineering marvel of its time, it is made up of a structure made up of four iron towers that, joined together by a crossbar, form a 160-meter-long structure.
The Hanging Bridge was created in order to unite Portugalete and Getxo and, since its inauguration in 1893, has been a means of transporting vehicles and passengers between these two towns. By means of a 25 meter long hanging platform that moves horizontally, you can get from one shore to the other.
Recently, the Bizkaia Bridge changed its black color to the so-called “Somorrostro Red Vein”, a color that characterizes characteristic buildings of Vizcaya such as the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao.
In addition, the platform, which transports passengers and cars, is the element that has evolved the most over time, going from being an open platform covered simply by a roof tile to being completely closed and safer and more comfortable for passengers.
The Vizcaya Bridge was designed by Alberto Palacio y Elissague, also known for their participation in the construction of the Crystal Palace in Madrid's Retiro Park.
